  • AFGE Local 609 Vision and Mission

Individually and collectively, we - the members and leaders of AFGE Local 609 - are committed to making a difference in the working life of our members.  Our collective vision is to advocate for members by leading, challenging, and working for change.

    Our mission is simple:

to represent our members as best we can, in any way we can and to continue our role as it's leaders among unions.

To accomplish this, we will promote and protect union democracy.  We will defend members' rights.  We will improve the quality of our member's work life.  We will organize workers and represent them in the best and most effective manner possible.

Our mission will be accomplished by:

    1. We recognize that quality personnel are the key to the quality of care provided to our Nations's veterans.  As a labor union, we will work to retain the best employees by improving benefits and working conditions.

    2. We recognize that succession planning is the key to representing, protecting and educating our members; we will strive to train our members, future union leaders and union staff.

    3. We will continue to assist AFGE at the National and Council level with legislative and political action to improve contracts, work life and laws affecting our members.

The process of defining who we are of members of a union is complex and rapidly changing.  But we have one constant focus - putting members first.

(updated January 2017)                                                         Teri James Local President
